San Luis Obispo, Calif. - The number seven was not lucky for the Missouri Tiger women's soccer team today, as its win streak was stopped at six at the hands of San Diego 2-1 in overtime at the California Classic. MU is now 6-2 on the season while San Diego improved to 6-1. Missouri finished second in the four-team field, on the strength of their 3-1 win Friday over Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo.
Both teams featured a strong scoring attack, but neither could find the back of the net until the fifty-second minute when Missouri's Nikki Thole put the Tigers up 1-0. Sarah Sallee collected a loose ball in the SDU end and passed across to Thole fifteen yards out. The junior forward dribbled through three defenders and powered a left-foot shot into the upper right-hand corner at 51:41 and MU had the match's first lead.
After nearly thirty minutes, San Diego tied the score when Jessica Crothers knocked in a Heather Swanson corner kick that the Tigers could not clear. With twenty minutes to play the teams were knotted at one. Neither squad could come up with a winner in regulation and the match moved to overtime, the second overtime match of the season for MU.
In the extra period, MU had several opportunities to score, but could not capitalize on their chances. At 98:36--8:36 into overtime--, San Diego's leading scorer, Sufia Wali, took a pass on the left side, moved the ball past the Tiger defense and then dribbled around MU goalkeeper Jackie Adamec and rolled the game-winner into the net.
The loss was just Missouri's second of the season breaking a six-match winning streak. It was the first game that Missouri outshot their opponent but did not win and Missouri did not lead at halftime for the first time since trailing 2-1 to Colorado on August 29.
The Tigers next play Sunday, September 26 at 4pm when they host Loyola-Chicago at Walton Stadium.
