Dec. 10, 1999
Columbia, Mo. - The University of Missouri wrestling team split two dual matches Friday night at the Hearnes Center Fieldshoue, beating Lindenwood, 27-15 before falling to No. 23 Purdue, 19-15. Missouri is now 1-3 on the season, while Lindenwood falls to 0-1 and Purdue improves to 2-2. Five Tigers won matches in both duals, as the Tigers continue to improve under second-year coach, Brian Smith.
The Lindenwood Lions (NAIA) gave the Tigers all they could handle in the first match. After a forfeit at 125 lbs. and a Mark Bader loss at 133 lbs. put MU down 9-0, a Jeremy Spates (141) major decision win, a Jeff Urban (149) techincal fall win, and a Jesse Jordan (157) decision put MU up 12-9.
LU's Dustin Dillon tied the score with a victory over Tiger Mark Vollmar, but John Kopnisky got the Tigers back on top, 15-12 with his 15th win on the season. MU's Josh Maze could not handle Nathan James and lost 4-2, tying the dual at 15 heading into the final two matches. At 197 lbs., Missouri's Kevin Herron gained a huge win by pinning Clint Hayes 1:59 into the match. The six team points gave MU a 21-15 lead with one match remaining. MU's Chad Hertzog finished the Lions off with a pin of Chris Smith 3:46 into the match and the Tigers had their first dual win of the season, 27-15.
Missouri came out firing versus Purdue in the second match. After losing six points to a forfeit at 125 lbs., Bader took on No. 19 Evan Robinson at 133 lbs. falling 11-6 and putting MU behind 9-0. Then the Tiger trio of Spates, Urban, and Jordan came through with three big wins to knot the dual at nine. Vollmar dropped a 10-2 major decision at 165 lbs., but Kopnisky was there to pick his team up, running his record to 16-1, 4-0 in dual action, with an 11-7 win over Jon Fitch. With Purdue leading 13-12, Josh Maze lost a tough bout to Jared Williams and Missouri faced a 16-12 deficit with two matches remaining. Kevin Herron did his part of bring Missouri back, winning his second match of the night, in overtime, 3-1 over Purdue's Mark Colegrove. The win helped MU crawl with one point, 16-15, of the Boilermakers and left the match to be decided by the heavyweights.
Three regulation periods could not decide the match as the wrestlers were tied at one after seven minutes. Neither Missouri's Chad Hertzog or Purdue's Jake Vercelli scored in the first overtime, sending the match deeper into sudden-death. Hertzog won the flip and chose down, intending to escape from Vercelli for one point and the iwn, but Purdue's big man held on for the thirty second overtime period and Purdue was awarded a win via tiebreaker and took the dual 19-15.
Missouri next wrestles Sunday, December 12 when they travel to Sioux City, Nebraska to face the No. 14-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers. The Big 12 Conference dual will be held at South Sioux City High School and is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
