COLUMBIA, MO. ___ -- Seniors Barry Odom and Rob Riti took home the top awards at Monday evening's Football Awards Banquet, sponsored by the Tiger Quarterback Club of Columbia and the University of Missouri Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
More than 500 persons were on hand at the Holiday Inn Select in Columbia to honor the 1999 MU Football Team, especially the 17-member senior class which compiled a cumulative four-year record of 24-22, including bowl seasons in 1997 and 1998.
Odom, a linebacker from Ada, Okla. who is the fourth-leading tackler in school history, was named the team's Most Valuable Player. He also earned the Defensive MVP Award, shared the Senior Co-Captain Award with Riti, was named to the Champions Club, and won the Brock Olivo Strength and Conditioning Award.
Riti, an All-America center from Florissant, Mo., was saluted as the Tigers' Offensive Most Valuable Player and also won the Ed "Brick" Travis Lineman of the Year Award.
Senior receiver Kent Layman (Kirkwood, MO) shared two of the evening's most emotional moments. He was the co-winner of the Curtis Jones Champion of the Year Award with Assistant Coach Moe Ankney, and shared the Don Faurot Most Inspirational Player Award with senior receiver Jamie Scholten (Columbia, MO).
Redshirt freshman defensive back John McPherson (Kansas City, KS) was the team's Special Teams Most Valuable Player. Senior nose tackle Jeff Marriott (Chillicothe, MO) received the Missouri "Mo" Award and was also named to the Champions Club. Senior kicker Tim Geiger (Belleville, IL) picked up the Senior Scholastic Award. Two other Tigers were Champions Club members - junior safety Julian Jones (Midwest City, OK) and sophomore defensive end Justin Smith (Jefferson City, MO).
In support roles, senior Josh Smith (Elizabethtown, PA) was the Manager of the Year, freshman Phillip Wilkerson (Monroe City, MO) was the Trainer of the Year, and senior Lagayle Braden (Kansas City, MO) won MU's first Video Assistant of the Year Award.
