Columbia, Mo. - The University of Missouri wrestling team lost its second dual of the season 34-3 Thursday night at the hands of the No. 6-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys. MU sophomore John Kopnisky ran his record to 7-0 with a victory in the last match of the dual over No. 20 Tony Gansen at 174 lbs. Though the score does not show it, Missouri competed in nearly every match, losing three matches by two points or less.
"We did some things well tonight, but we still have a ways to go," Missouri Head Coach Brian Smith said afterward. "Kop [John Kopnisky] got a huge win, which helps us all."
The aforementioned Missouri wrestler defeated the first ranked wrestler of his career and clearly has a shot of at his first national ranking of the season at 174 lbs.
Oklahoma State dominated the less experienced Tigers, running off nine straight wins, including a forfeit a 125 lbs., shutting out MU 34-0 heading into the Kopnisky-Gansen bout. Missouri's win in that match were the first team points scored by MU versus Oklahoma State since 1997, when MU narrowly lost to the then-No. 1-ranked Cowboys, 23-17. The Missouri Tigers next wrestle at the St. Louis Open this Friday and Saturday with nearly all the Tigers taking part in the competition. MU's next dual will take place when the Tigers host Purdue and Lindenwood on December 10 at 6:00pm in the Hearnes Center Fieldhouse.
