Box Score
Lincoln, Neb. - The Missouri Women?s Soccer team dropped its fourth match of the season Sunday to No. 4 Nebraska, 5-1 at the Abbott Soccer Complex. The Tigers remain in second place in the Big 12 race, but dropped to 11-4 overall, 6-2 in the Big 12. The Cornhuskers improved to 13-1-1, 7-0 in Big 12 play. Senior goalkeeper Jackie Adamec took the loss in net, despite making eight saves, which dropped her record to 11-4-0.
?We played right with Nebraska for sixty minutes, but in the end their depth wore us down,? Head Coach Bryan Blitz said. ?We will use this as a learning experience going into next weekend?s matches and get back on track as a team.?
MU got on the board first with a score in the 21st minute. Kristin Boeker sent a corner kick into the Nebraska goal box, which was deflected out by NU goal keeper Karina LeBlanc. Missouri senior forward Erin Grimsley was at the right spot at the right time, as she collected the loose deflection and punched the ball in the net for her 11th goal of the season.
In the 24th minute, NU tied it up when Kelly Rheem placed a cross in the box and Shannon Tanaka knocked a shot into the upper right-hand corner for a 1-1 tie. The score remained tied at halftime, but in the second period of play it was all NU offense.
The Huskers took the lead for good in the 51st minute on a goal by Christine Latham, her first of two in the match, as the Huskers controlled the ball and kept the Tiger defense on its heels. Latham?s second goal in the 84th minute gave NU a 3-1 lead with six minutes remaining.
Two goals by Nebraska midfielder Meghan Anderson, in the 86th and 90th minutes, were the exclamation points at the end of the 5-1 Nebraska victory over MU.
Missouri will look to solidify its spot in the upcoming Big 12 Conference Tournament next weekend when it finishes its Big 12 schedule with home matches versus No. 21 Texas A&M on Friday at 4pm and Texas on Sunday at 1pm. Both matches will be held at Walton Stadium.
Sarah Sallee Out For Remainder of Season
Columbia, Mo.--University of Missouri soccer sophomore Sarah Sallee will miss the remainder of the 1999 season the team learned yesterday. Sallee suffered a compound fracture of the tibia and fibula in her left leg and a fractured fifth finger on her left hand during a collision with Iowa State Cyclone goalkeeper Lynley Hilligoss on Friday in Ames. Sallee scored the match-winning goal on the play.
The play occurred in the 80th minute when Sallee took a pass from Erin Grimsley and began to dribble to set up a shot. Hilligoss came off her line to charge the play, colliding with Sallee just as the Tiger took her shot about ten yards from the goal. The ball went in giving Missouri a 3-2 advantage, but Sallee went down on contact. The Missouri training staff, Iowa State training staff, and Iowa State medical staff responded immediately and Sallee was taken by ambulance to the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa where she underwent surgery Friday night. Sallee returned to Columbia on Sunday.
The Tulsa, Oklahoma native had been experiencing a breakthrough season. Sallee had scored six goals with five assists for 17 points, the third highest goal and point total on team.
?Sarah has been a big part of our success and she will be missed, but she will be an inspiration for us for the rest of the season,? Head Coach Bryan Blitz said of Salee. ?We will look forward to her return in the spring.?
