Ames, Iowa - The University of Missouri women's soccer team won its 11th match of the season Friday, tying the school's season high win total, with a 4-3 victory over Iowa State in Ames. Missouri ran its overall mark to 11-3 with a 6-1 Big 12 Conference record. Four different MU players scored in the match. Senior All-Big 12 goalkeeper Jackie Adamec got the win in net for Missouri, which broke ISU's five-match home winning streak.
Senior forward Erin Grimsley put Missouri up early with her tenth goal of the season at 12:58 on a through ball from Nikki Thole, her seventh assist of the year. MU took that 1-0 into halftime.
The second half proved to be one of the most competitive halves of soccer the Tigers have played this season. The teams scored six goals in the second period, all of which came in the match's final thirty minutes, as both teams scrapped for the Big 12 win.
ISU tied the match at 61:14 when Janelle Beil scored the first of her two goals to knot things up at one. Less than five minutes later, ISU was called for a hand-ball violation in the goal box, setting up a penalty kick for the Tigers. Junior forward Kristin Boeker pocketed her third score of the season, and Missouri led 2-1 at 66:05.
Beil came right back for ISU, with her second score at 77:47 when she headed a loose ball past a diving Adamec to tie the score for the second time in the match. Twelve minutes remained to decide the Big 12 match.
At 79:54, Missouri's Sarah Sallee took a pass from Grimsley, beat her defender and sent a low line-drive into the left corner, giving MU a 3-2 advantage, with her first game-winner of the season. However, on the play, Sallee collided with ISU goalkeeper Lynley Hilligross. On the collision, Sallee was injured, did not return to play, and will not play Sunday versus Nebraska on Sunday. Like any great team, the Tigers responded for their teammate.
Just thirty-six seconds after their third goal, Missouri scored its fourth when Thole scored her 15th of the season on Heather Buchheit's second assist of 1999. Missouri led 4-2 with ten minutes remaining.
ISU did not lose its fire, netting another score to cut the Tiger lead to one goal, at 85:47. Erica Florez knocked the third ISU goal in off a pass from Beil, but the MU defense stepped in the final five minutes to preserve the victory.
Missouri improved to 10-0 when leading at halftime and 10-1 when it scores the match's first goal. The Tigers' six conference wins are a season-high for the program. Its' 11 wins overall to this point matches the program's season-high for victories.
Missouri next plays Sunday afternoon at 1pm in Lincoln,Neb. when they take on the Big 12 Conference-leading Nebraska Cornhuskers at Abbott Sports Complex. MU's next home match comes Friday, October 22 when they host the Texas A&M Aggies at 4pm.
