Men's Basketball Schedule Finalized

Aug. 26, 1999

The University of Missouri men's basketball schedule has been finalized for the upcoming 1999-2000 season, as announced by Director of Athletics Michael Alden, and it's not one for the faint of heart.

Head Coach QUIN SNYDER and his first Tiger squad will take on what should prove to be one of the nation's toughest schedules. The veritable 'who's who' among national strengths include non-conference matchups with Kentucky, Indiana, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and Syracuse or Princeton, in addition to exciting games versus St. Louis, SMU and the always-rugged Big 12 Conference. The Tigers will play 17 games this season against 14 teams which reached postseason play in 1998-99 (10 NCAA Tournament, four NIT) - 12 of which won 20 or more games.

"This has to be one of the toughest schedules in the nation," said Snyder, who will lead a Tiger team that returns just two starters from last year, when MU went 20-9 and reached the NCAA Tournament. "It's quite a challenge for us, but I believe that facing this level of competition helps us grow. These tests will hopefully help in our development not only this year, but in the future, both individually and collectively," he said.

Once again, Missouri fans will have plenty of opportunities to see MU play via the airwaves, as the Tigers are scheduled to make five nationally-televised appearances, five regional cable appearances, and seven statewide appearances on the Mizzou Sports Network. Highlighting MU's national appearances are games against Kansas (on Jan. 22nd in Columbia - ABC, and on March 5th in Lawrence - CBS), an ESPN Big Monday home tilt vs. Oklahoma State (Feb. 21st) and two other Saturday ESPN contests at Iowa State (Jan. 8th) and at Oklahoma (Feb. 26th).

The Quin Snyder era will officially get underway on Nov. 12th in Syracuse, N.Y., where Missouri will take on Wisconsin in the first round of the NABC Classic. The Tigers will play the following day against either host Syracuse or Princeton in the championship or consolation finals. Snyder's first-ever home game will take place Nov. 19th with a clash against North Carolina-Asheville.

A three-week stretch in December will see MU play the likes of Indiana (Dec. 7th in Columbia), St. Louis (Dec. 12th at the TWA Dome in St. Louis), Iowa (Dec. 18th in Columbia), Illinois (Dec. 21st at the Kiel Center in St. Louis) and perennial-power Kentucky (Dec. 30th at the Sugar Bowl Classic in New Orleans, La.).

In the Big 12 scheduling matrix, Missouri will face South Division opponents Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas A&M at home, and will travel to Baylor, Oklahoma and Texas Tech, in addition to home-and-away dates with North brethren Colorado, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State and Nebraska.

SCHEDULE NOTES

? The 14 teams on MU's schedule which reached postseason play last year include: NCAA teams - Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Syracuse, Texas, Winthrop and Wisconsin, NIT teams - Colorado, Kansas State, Nebraska and Princeton.

? The 12 teams on MU's schedule which won 20 or more games last year include: Indiana (23-11), Iowa (20-10), Kansas (23-10), Kansas State (20-13), Kentucky (28-9), Nebraska (20-13), Oklahoma (22-11), Oklahoma State (23-11), Princeton (22-8), Syracuse (21-12), Winthrop (21-8) and Wisconsin (22-10). That total doesn't include defending Big 12 champ Texas, which finished with a mark of 19-13 overall.

? Missouri closes the regular season at rival Kansas, March 5th on CBS. The last time MU played a regular season finale at KU was in 1992, when Anthony Peeler wrapped up Big Eight player of the year honors by pouring in 43 points.

? Missouri has won 25 consecutive home openers, dating back to a 95-81 win over Wisconsin-Oshkosh to tip off the 1974-75 season. The Tigers open the home portion of the '99-00 schedule Nov. 19th against North Carolina-Asheville.

? Missouri takes on four Big Ten Conference opponents during the regular season - Wisconsin, Indiana, Iowa and Illinois. That's the most Big Ten foes MU has taken on in 45 years, when the 1954-55 squad played, ironically, the exact same four schools.
