COLUMBIA, MO -- The Missouri Tigers gymnastics team won every event Sunday and swept to their first Corvette Cup championship since 1995. Mizzou's score of 193.925 was the second highest in school history and the third best team score in the five-year history of the Corvette Cup.
Texas Woman's University placed second with a score of 193.05 and 23rd-ranked Central Michigan was third (190.3). Iowa was scheduled to participate in the meet but pulled out on Thursday when the entire team was suspended for undisclosed reasons.
Three Tigers won individual championships, Sunday. Senior Jessica Haag tied her career high - 9.825 - in winning her sixth vaulting championship of the season and her fourth in a row. Junior Alison Akers tied the Corvette Cup record - 9.85 - in tying Texas Woman's Kim Koenig for first place on the balance beam. And junior Shannon Brown took the uneven bars at 9.85.
Senior Amanda Peterson, the only Tiger ever to top 39 in the all-around, did it for the fourth time this season, placing second at 39.05. Koenig won the all-around title with her season-best score of 39.125.
Missouri scored 48.8 to set a Corvette Cup team record on balance beam, a score that is the fourth highest in school history. MU also scored 48.8 on floor - tied for number-five on the school's all-time chart. The Tigers' bars total of 48.35 is tied for the fifth-best mark in school annals.
Missouri (9-9) is scheduled to travel to Iowa for a dual meet on Saturday. The status of that meet, though, is up in the air as a result of Iowa's team suspension. A decision should be made early this week. MU has one home meet remaining - the Big 12 Conference Championships, March 27, at Hearnes Center.
