Tigers Fail to Help Themselves at Florida

GAINESVILLE, FL -- The Missouri Tigers bounced back from last week's disappointing performance at Texas Woman's University but not enough to aid their effort to qualify for the NCAA Region 3 Gymnastics Championships.

Missouri (9-12) scored 192.1 Friday night at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center but lost to the No. 11 Florida Gators (10-8) who tallied 195.725. The Tigers needed to score higher than 192.15 to improve their Regional Qualifying Score which currently stands at 193.256.

"We had problems on two events again," Coach Jake Jacobson said, "bars and floor. We missed our first three routines on bars and blew floor, so we're not very happy. We didn't help ourselves."

The Tigers were strong, though on balance beam, hitting six straight routines and scoring 48.75. Junior Shannon Brown led the way, placing second with a career-high score of 9.85. Senior Amanda Peterson took third in the all-around (38.775) and senior Jessica Haag tied for second in the vault, scoring 9.75. Haag had won the vaulting competition in MU's five previous outings.

Florida took the top five places on the floor. Florida's Betsy Hamm won the uneven bars and the balance beam on her way to winning the all-around (39.3).

Missouri hosts the Big 12 Conference Championships next Saturday at Hearnes Center. The meet begins at 7 p.m. Tickets ($6 adults, $4 students) are available at the MU Athletic Ticket Office, or by calling 1-800-CAT-PAWS.
