Max Askren became the fifth Tiger wrestler to win an individual NCAA championship when he claimed the 184-pound title as a senior in 2010. He was a three-time all-American, starting with a 7th-place finish at 197 pounds in 2008, followed by a 5th-place showing at 197 in 2009 before his title in 2010. His 20-2 record as a senior helped lead the Tigers to a 10th-place team finish at the NCAA Championships. They were 7th his junior year and 11th when he was a sophomore. Askren finished his career with a stellar mark of 104-16 (.867) which was the fourth-best career winning percentage in program history at the time. He was a two-time Big 12 Conference champion at 197 pounds (2007, 2008) and a four-time National Wrestling Coaches’ Association academic all-American as well as a four-time academic all-Big 12 choice. Won the team’s Most Outstanding Wrestler award for his 2010 title-winning season, three years after he began his career by winning the team’s Most Outstanding Freshman award. Max was preceded in the MU Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame by his older brother, Ben, who was also a national champion wrestler for the Tigers.
