One of the top-five javelin throwers in Mizzou track and field history, John Thies returns to Mizzou for his first season as volunteer assistant in 2010. Thies launched his way up the Mizzou record books last season as he set the third-best javelin throw mark in school history after tossing 65.41m (214-7) at the Ward Haylett Invitational. That mark was also an NCAA Mideast Regional qualifying mark.
Thies spent his first two seasons at Mizzou as a pitcher on the Mizzou baseball team before giving the javelin a try. His best year on the diamond came in 2006 when he made 10 appearances and did not allow an earned run for a span of five-straight games.
Thies is a recent graduate of Mizzou is pursuing a Master's degree in educational and counseling psychology while serving as a volunteer assistant.

2008:
Outdoor: Placed 13th at the Big 12 Championships with the javelin (189-8, 57.83m) ... marked season's best 199-5 (60.78m) at the Emporia Twilight ... winner of javelin events at the Tom Botts Invitational and at the Jefferson Cup, dual at Virginia.
2007:
Baseball: Pitched in two games for the Tigers, tabbed as the starter in one ... had a 5.79 ERA with 4.2 IP, allowing 3 ER and 7 hits on two walks and a strikeout.
2006:
Baseball: Made 10 appearances on the mound for Mizzou, including one start ... did not allow an earned run in first five outings ... struck out four in two innings of relief work against Louisiana-Monroe on Feb. 17 ... pitched a season-long 3.2 innings and struck out five coming out of the bullpen against Southeast Missouri State on March 29 ... started the second matchup of the season against SEMO, matching the five strikeouts on April 12.
High School:
Was a first team all-district baseball selection as a senior at Cape Central High School in Cape Girardeau, Mo., as a left-handed pitcher ... was 9-2 as a senior with a 2.10 ERA ... struck out 109 and walked just 24 in 2003 ... compiled a 24-10 career record with a 2.50 ERA and 350 strikeouts ... also had a career batting average of .455 ... was a first team all-district and second team all-region selection in football.
Personal:
Son of Chris Thies and April Bauer ... is a general studies major with interests in business or teaching ... while at Meramec Junior College, was 8-5 with a 3.60 ERA and 88 strikeouts ... born September 23, 1984 in Effingham, Ill.
