As a swimmer, Brown swam for the University of Arizona and was a six-ime All-American, team captain, first team Academic All-American, PAC-10 Championx` and a two time U.S. National Team Member. Brown focused on the 200 and 400 Individual Medleys, and at his best was ranked in the top 10 of both events in the world. He was an U.S. Olympic Trials finalist in the 400IM and a multiple time U.S. Open champion and meet record holder.
