- Nation’s No. 1 overall recruit as a high school senior out of Nathan Hale High School in Seattle, Washington, after playing three previous prep seasons in Columbia at Father Tolton Catholic.
- Averaged an outstanding 36.2 points and 13.6 rebounds per game as a senior for Nathan Hale in 2016-17.
- Helped lead Nathan Hale to a perfect 29-0 record en route to the Washington Class 3A State Championship, the first-ever state title for the school.
- Completed significant trifecta of awards by receiving MVP of the McDonald’s All-American Game, as well as the Naismith and Gatorade Boys National Player of the Year awards, joining just Dwight Howard (2004), LeBron James (2003), Chris Webber (1991) and Alonzo Mourning (1988) to accomplish the feat.
- Sixth McDonald's All-American signee at Mizzou, all-time, and first since 2000.
- Showcased talents at Jordan Brand Classic as a high school senior.
- Appeared with Team USA’s U-18 squad on multiple occasions through his junior and senior seasons.
- Averaged 28.5 points and 11.8 rebounds per game as a junior in 2015-16, helping Tolton to a 26-3 record and Columbia's first high school state basketball championship in 54 years.

- Mother, Lisa, played college basketball at Iowa, while his father, Michael, Sr., played collegiately at New Orleans.

- Older sisters Bri and Cierra play for Mizzou Women's Basketball, coached by their aunt, Robin Pingeton.
- Younger brother Jontay reclassified from the 2018 recruiting class to join Michael as a freshman teammate.
