Men’s Basketball Tops Mississippi State

The Mizzou men's basketball team added another SEC wins to its resume on Saturday afternoon, defeating Mississippi State, 84-79. The Tigers improve to 15-7 overall and 5-4 in league play, while the Bulldogs drop to 11-11 and 3-6 against SEC foes.
MIZZOU LEADERS
Senior Mark Mitchell led the way for Missouri, scoring 19 points, while adding seven rebounds and four assists.
T.O. Barrett tallied 16 points, including a 2-of-4 clip from beyond the arc and a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe. The sophomore nabbed a career-high eight rebounds in the win, while matching Mitchell for the team lead with four assists.
Junior Trent Pierce added 13 points, shooting 3-of-6 from the 3-point line, while Jayden Stone also scored in double figures with 11 points.
GAME RECAP
The Tigers started the contest on first from 3-point range, connecting on five of their first six from beyond the arc to race out to a double-digital lead at 21-11.
Mississippi State, however, took advantage of a 10-0 run to take its first lead, 26-25, just past the halfway point of the first stanza before Jacob Crews and Stone triples gave the Tigers a and quick six points and brought the lead back to five for MU. The Tigers and Bulldogs traded buckets as the half went on with Missouri taking a seven-point advantage into the half, 42-35.
Out of the half, Missouri took a 7-0 run to extend the lead to 14, 55-41, highlighted by back-to-back dunks from Shawn Phillips Jr., leading to a Bulldog timeout.
The teams continued to trade scores as the half went on, with MU maintaining at least a double-digit lead until the six-minute mark.
An 11-2 run by the visitors cut the Tigers lead to three with two minutes to play but the Tigers were secure in hitting their free throws down the stretch, making 10-of-12 over the final two minutes, to earn the 84-79 win.
TEAM STATS
Missouri shot 43.1 percent in the winning effort with a 25-of-33 clip (75.8 percent) from the free-throw line and 15 assists as a team. The Tigers also held the Bulldogs to 43.1 percent from the field with an 11-of-28 mark from beyond the arch, tallying seven team blocks.

Missouri travels to Columbia, South Carolina, to take on South Carolina on Feb. 7. Tipoff is set for noon CT on SEC Network.
