Mizzou Volleyball Sweeps the Dukes in Season Opener

Head coach Dawn Sullivan earned her 150th career victory, as the Tigers took home a sweep to start the season

Mizzou volleyball (1-0) trounced James Madison (0-1) in three sets (25-19, 25-15, 25-20) as it picked up the victory in the season opener on Friday, Aug. 29, in Fort Myers, Fla.

The Tigers boasted a hitting percentage of .374 as they swept through the Dukes to give head coach Dawn Sullivan her 150th career victory. 

KEY PLAYERS

  • Senior outside hitter Caylen Alexander led the team with 14 kills and ended up with five digs and one block.

  • Redshirt junior setter Marina Crownover posted a double-double as she recorded 36 assists and 11 digs. This is Crownover's 12th career double-double. 

  • Redshirt senior middle blocker Tyrah Ariail led the Tigers in blocks with two and added four kills in her first career game with Mizzou. 

  • Redshirt junior middle blocker Kimani Johnson eclipsed her career high with 13 kills on a .812 hitting percentage on 16 total attacks. 

  • Senior libero Maya Sands picked up 11 digs, as she earned her 1,500th career dig. 

  • Freshman outside hitter Paige Felder recorded the lone ace for the Tigers. She completed her first career start with seven kills, three digs and one block.

FIRST SET (25-19, Mizzou leads 1-0)

Mizzou found its rhythm in the early portion of the match as it set the tone with an early 6-0 lead, including three-straight kills from Alexander. 

The Missouri transfers carried the first set kills tally, as Alexander ended with five and Ariail finished the set with four kills. 

The Tigers held the advantage throughout the set after that initial lead as Felder was able to finish the first leg with two kills in the final three points. 

SECOND SET (25-15, Mizzou leads 2-0)

Mizzou boasted its longest scoring streak of the match in the second as it claimed seven-straight points and eight of nine to grow the lead from 11-8 to 19-9. 

The Tigers continued their attack strength, finishing the second set with a .593 hitting percentage, which gave them a .403 hitting percentage after two sets. 

Johnson played a significant role in that success, recording seven of her 13 kills in the second set. 

THIRD SET (25-20, Mizzou leads 3-0)

The Tigers finalized the score with the closest set of the entire match. Mizzou ended the final set with a .324 hitting percentage in 37 attacks, and the most digs in a single set with 20. 

Sands was the biggest contributor in that category, as she earned four, pushing her to 11 total and giving her 1,500 digs in the final few points. 

In total the set had four ties and two lead changes, as the set was back-and-forth until Mizzou scored six of seven points to move the score from 10-8 to 15-9. That run saw one block and kills from four different athletes - Felder, Crownover, Ariail and Alexander. 

GAME NOTES

  • Kimani Johnson posted a career best in kills and hitting percentage as she posted 13 kills with zero errors on 16 total attacks for a .812 hitting percentage. 

  • Maya Sands concluded her day with 11 digs - four in the final set - as finished the day with exactly 1,500 career digs. 

  • Head Coach Dawn Sullivan picked up her 150th win for her career. 

  • In her first game with the Tigers, Caylen Alexander led the squad in kills with 14. On the other side Tyrah Ariail led the team in blocks with two - one solo and one assisted. 

  • Marina Crownover completed her 12th career double-double, with 36 assists and 11 digs. 

  • Freshmen Paige Felder and Zoey Matias-Lopez earned their first career start.

  • The Tigers remain in Florida for one more day, as they face the home squad, Florida Gulf Coast starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Apr. 30 at Alico Arena. Mizzou vs. FGCU will be streamed via ESPN+.
