
Bashir Earns SEC Women's Tennis Player of the Week Honors

COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri tennis player Lailaa Bashir was named Southeastern Conference Player of the Week, announced the league office, Wednesday, March 25. The graduate student earns the accolade for the first time in her career and marks the program's first honor since 2019 (Mackenzy Middlebrooks – Feb. 20, 2019).
Bashir has been playing at a high level this season, coming in as a graduate transfer from Grand Canyon. The Jackson, Mississippi native recently clinched Missouri's 4-3 win over No. 22 Florida on March 21. Bashir and partner Zoe Lazar captured the doubles point with a 6-3 win. In singles, the graduate student secured the match win for the Tigers, claiming a 6-3, 7-6(4) victory.
Two days later, at No. 8 Auburn, Bashir went unfinished against No. 62 Angella Okutoyi after claiming the first set 6-3 and the second set tied at one all.
Bashir is 12-11 this season in singles, playing primarily in the No. 3 spot. The graduate student, paired with Lazar, the tandem holds eight wins in doubles, competing mainly on court three.
UP NEXT
The Tigers return home to welcome No. 49 Ole Miss to Columbia, Mo., on Friday at noon CT. Pending weather, the action will take place either inside Green Tennis Center or at the Country Club of Missouri.
