Rebels’ Late Offensive Surge Sinks Baseball in Series Opener, 9-6

COLUMBIA, Mo. – No. 24 Ole Miss scored six times over a two-inning stretch to turn a 3-2 deficit into a five-run lead Friday evening against University of Missouri baseball, ultimately claiming a 9-6 victory over the Tigers in the opening contest of the two clubs' Southeastern Conference series at Taylor Stadium.

Despite a strong five-inning effort from Mizzou starting pitcher Ian Lohse, the Rebels offense came to life to score a pair of sixth-inning runs to claim the lead, before breaking the game open with a four-run seventh that stretched the margin to 8-3. Isaac Humphrey played a key role in both Ole Miss rallies, driving in three of the Rebels' six runs over the game's critical stretch.

Humphrey, who finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs, was one of four Rebels to log two-hit performances on the night. He homered in the top of the second to stake the Rebels (16-5, 2-2 SEC) to an early 1-0 lead, then absorbed a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth to force home the tying run. After Will Furniss and Austin Fawley came through with run-scoring hits to bring in the first two Ole Miss runs of the seventh, Humphrey dealt the Tigers a back-breaking blow with a two-run single to right, stretching the cushion to five runs.

Mizzou (8-12, 0-4 SEC) showed plenty of fight at the plate as well, as the Tigers scored a pair of runs in the second to overcome the early deficit. Pierre Seals put Mizzou on the board with an RBI-single – the last of three consecutive MU hits to open the inning – before Jedier Hernandez's sacrifice bunt and corresponding Ole Miss throwing error plated the second Tigers run.

After Ole Miss countered with a run in the top of the third to knot the score at 2-2, Mateo Serna launched his team-leading fifth home run of the season to center, once again handing Mizzou and Lohse a one-run advantage.

Lohse held the Rebels in check through the fifth, twice working his way out of two-on, one-out jams to preserve the lead. The fifth-year senior fanned two or more hitters in three of the first four frames to match his career high of eight strikeouts. He stranded a pair of Rebels in scoring position in the third, before negating back-to-back singles by striking out the side in the fourth. He capped his night with another critical punchout to end the fifth, once again leaving the potential tying baserunner in scoring position.

Jackson Lovich, who led the Tigers with a 3-for-5 night at the plate, snapped a four-inning scoring drought for Mizzou with a one-out, RBI-single that drew MU to within four runs in the seventh. He added a ninth-inning home run – his fourth of the season – after Peyton Basler belted a solo shot for his first career home run in the eighth.
