VERO BEACH, Fla. – Alabama State plated nine two-out runs and rode a shutdown performance from its pitching staff to a 10-2 victory over University of Missouri baseball Saturday afternoon on day two of the Andre Dawson Classic at Holman Stadium.
After Missouri starting pitcher Ian Lohse cruised through the first four innings by allowing just one run on three hits, Isaiah Landry's base hit snapped a string of seven straight hitters retired and ignited a two-out rally that would lead to two critical runs that put the Hornets in front to stay. Kelvin Agosto followed with a run-scoring double to right-center that narrowly eluded the glove of Kaden Peer, putting ASU in front, 2-1. Next Kameron Douglas followed with a two-bagger to left that brought in Agosto for a two-run Hornets advantage.
From that point, ASU starter Jafet Martinez (2-0) and reliever Will Smith made the lead stand, holding the Tigers to one hit over the final six innings to lift the Hornets (3-4) to their second consecutive win in Vero Beach. Martinez permitted just four hits, three of which came during the Tigers' lone scoring rally in the third. The sophomore right-hander responded by retiring nine straight Tigers to give his offense time to click.
Alabama State did just that over the middle innings, scoring a total of nine runs from the fifth through the eighth frames. Back-to-back one-out hits in the sixth led to a fourth ASU run, before the Hornets broke the game wide open by putting five consecutive batters aboard after MU reliever Victor Christal quickly retired the first two hitters of the inning. Kyler McIntosh's two-run double was the key blow in the rally, as the Hornets stretched the margin to seven runs.
Mizzou scored in the eighth on Mateo Serna's one-out, RBI single against Smith, pulling the Tigers to within eight runs.
Lohse (0-2) was tagged with the setback, working a career-long 5.0 innings and striking out six Hornets. His lone mistake early came on a first-inning, two-out offering to Juan Cruz, who launched his fourth home run of the season to put ASU on top, 1-0.
The Tigers (2-4) responded to even the score in the third after putting their first three batters on base. Pierre Seals got the ball rolling with a long double off the top of the center field wall that was originally ruled a home run. Jedier Hernandez followed with a base hit to left, before Trey Lawrence's liner into shallow right brought in Seals with the equalizing run.
Alabama State's offense racked up 16 hits in the game, including 12 two-out safeties. Mikel Pryor paced ASU with a 3-for-5 day at the dish, while McIntosh drove in three runs for the Hornets.
