Men’s Basketball Leads Wire-to-Wire, Defeats Alabama State

The Mizzou men's basketball team never trailed en route to an 85-77 victory over Alabama State on Thursday night. With the win, the Tigers improve to 9-2, while the Hornets fall to 3-7.
MIZZOU LEADERS
Graduate student Jacob Crews led Mizzou with 20 points off a season-high six 3-pointers. In his first start of the season, Crews shot 7-of-9 from the floor, including 6-of-8 from beyond the arc to go along with four rebounds. Junior Anthony Robinson II added 19 points with a 7-of-11 clip from the field to go along with a team-high five assists and two steals.
Senior Mark Mitchell notched 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting, adding four rebounds and three assists. Junior Sebastian Mack rounded out Mizzou's double-digit scorers with 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting.
GAME RECAP
The Tigers jumped out to a hot start, knocking down 10 of their first 13 shots. Mizzou held a two-point lead before Crews sparked a 15-0 run, sinking four 3-pointers in the first eight minutes. Mizzou led 29-12 as the half inched towards the halfway mark.
The Tigers remained in control throughout the remainder of the first. Mitchell finished an and-one play and then followed it up with a thunderous slam on the next possession as part of a 6-0 run for Mizzou. The Tigers held a 50-32 advantage in the closing minutes of the half and went into the break ahead by 13.
Heading into the second half, Mizzou held firm. Crews cashed in on his fifth 3-pointer of the night, extending the Tigers lead to 63-49 with 13 minutes remaining.
With under 10 minutes to play, Robinson navigated through the lane and converted an and-1 as part of a 9-0 Tigers run that put them firmly in the driver's seat with an 18-point lead.
Mizzou held on in the final minutes, weathering a late push from Alabama State to secure an eight-point victory.
TEAM STATS
Mizzou shot 64.7 percent from the field in the winning effort with a 6-of-16 clip (50 percent) from beyond the arc. The Tigers scored 15 points off turnovers and worked the Cougars in the paint, outscoring them 46-26.
Alabama State made 47.5 percent of its attempts with a 13-of-26 clip (50 percent) from 3-point range.
