
Tennis Picks Up Two Wins In Home Doubleheader

COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri tennis defeated South Dakota and Northern Illinois in doubleheader action on Sunday, Jan. 19. The Tigers start their spring season 2-0, while the Coyotes begin the year 0-1, and the Huskies fall to 2-1.
Match One: South Dakota
Missouri started its first match of the day with a 1-0 lead after claiming the doubles point over South Dakota. The No. 3 pairing secured victory first, with graduate student Lailaa Bashir and freshman Zoe Lazar topping the Coyotes 6-4. Clinching the doubles point for the Tigers was the No. 1 pair of senior Inah Canete and freshman Korina Roso, 6-3.
In singles action, Canete cruised to victory on court two, 6-4, 6-2. Freshman Gian Octa earned a win in her first collegiate dual, earning a win on court four in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5. Roso clinched the match against South Dakota with a singles win on court six, 6-1, 6-0. Junior Andrea Artimedi closed out the contest with a cherry on top, 6-2, 6-3, to make the final, 5-2.
Match Two: Northern Illinois
The Tigers secured the double point again with wins on courts one and two, this time against Northern Illinois in the afternoon match. The No. 2 dou of Artimedi and senior Mary Brumfield battled back after being down to secure the point, 7-6 (7-4).
Canete stayed hot and secured the singles win at No. 1, 6-4, 6-0. Additionally, Artimedi on court five and Roso on court six secured straight-set wins to seal the match for Missouri. Octa battled back and forth at No. 4 with Northern Illinois' Lucia Yecora, but ultimately lost, 1-6, 7-5, 7-5.
Canete and Roso finished perfect on the day with two wins in doubles and singles. Artimedi finished a doubles and two singles wins.
