University of Missouri Athletics mourns the death of one of its most decorated track and field athletes, Andrea Fischer, M.D., a four-time All-American, who died on August 6, at the age of 60 due to complications related to Alzheimer's disease.
Fischer competed for the Tigers in 1982-85 in the three-mile run, the 3,000-meter run and the distance medley. She was just the second women's distance runner in program history to be inducted into the University of Missouri Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame in 1997.
Fischer earned All-American status four different times in her career. She was also a two-time conference champion in 1982 and 1983 in the outdoor 3,000-meter run (9:14.95) and the indoor three-mile run (15:18.94), respectively.
As a recruit, Fischer was a state champion at Hannibal High School in three competitions during her senior year. In 1980-81, she was the Missouri State Cross Country Champion and the Missouri State Track and Field Champion in the mile and two-mile runs, setting state records in the events.
After graduating from MU, she continued her education at the University of Durham in England and the Art Institute of Houston. Fischer then returned to Columbia to work for the Mizzou Magazine as a graphic designer.
Upon her return, Fischer continued her athletic career. She became a national age-group cycling champion and triathlete, placing at the Ironman World Championship in 1996 and the Ironman Germany event in 1997. After turning 38, Fischer returned to MU seeking a degree at the university's medical school, where her father attended, and worked as a radiologist at the Harry S. Truman VA Hospital.
Fischer is survived by her two daughters, Elizabeth and Ann-Marie Henderson, and her immediate family – her sisters Cynthia and Heidi and their mother, Betty. Andrea's father, Thomas Fischer, M.D., passed away in 2016.
