Tigers Topple Nicholls Behind Another Offensive Outburst

Mizzou puts up 14 runs in second straight run-rule win

THIBODAUX, La. – For a second consecutive night to begin the 2022 season, Missouri baseball needed just seven innings to earn a 14-2 victory over Nicholls State on Saturday at Ray E. Didier Field.

The Tigers (2-0) did all their damage in just three innings, scoring four in the second and the sixth before sealing the run-rule win with a six-run seventh inning. Mizzou pounced on every extra opportunity, scoring 10 runs after Nicholls (0-2) errors including all six runs in the seventh inning.

Sophomore Austin Troesser (1-0) earned the win in his first collegiate start. The hard throwing right-hander went a career-best four innings while surrendering a pair of runs. He struck out six while not issuing a walk. Junior Nathan Landry, a transfer from Mineral Area College, made his debut in relief to earn the three-inning save. Landry did not allow a run while surrendering just two hits.

IMPACT INNING

With a 4-2 lead in the sixth, Mizzou punished a two-out Nicholls error to score four times and break the game open. Following the error which scored one, Ross Lovich singled home Ty Wilmsmeyer. Shortstop Josh Day followed with a towering two-run blast to right center, his first of the season, to punctuate the Tigers' second four-spot of the night.

  • Freshman Shea McGahan earned his first collegiate hit with a line-drive single in his pinch-hit appearance in the seventh inning.
  • Junior Nander de Sedas made his Mizzou debut in a thunderous way, launching a two-run, pinch-hit blast deep beyond the right field wall.

FROM THE SKIP

Coach Bieser on team's response to a tight game in the middle innings…

"I mean we got to the point they tightened it up to 4-2, and we're kind of starting to line up our top guys in the bullpen to be ready to go get this thing and then, all of a sudden, with two outs again, the team really responds."

UP NEXT

The Tigers look to clinch the series on Sunday in a 1 p.m. first pitch. Sophomore transfer Carter Rustad is scheduled to get the start on the mound for Mizzou.
