COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Tennis junior Bronte Murgett (Holmfirth, Great Britain) was selected to compete in the singles portion of the 2021 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships, announced by the organization on Tuesday. Murgett is the third individual in program history to qualify for the NCAA Tournament and the first since Bea Machado Santos in 2016.
In addition, the doubles team of Murgett and senior Marta Oliveira (Lisbon, Portugal) was selected as the No. 3 alternate for the doubles portion of the tournament.
The tournament will take place May 16-28 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. The singles competition is slated to being May 23.
Murgett was named to the All-SEC Conference second team on April 29, becoming the fourth Tiger to earn All-SEC honors and the first since Bea Machado Santos was named to the second team in 2017. A first-year Tiger after spending three seasons at New Mexico (2017-20), Murgett has posted an 18-8 in singles competition this season and currently ranks No. 31 in the Oracle/ITA National Singles Rankings. She has posted a 10-7 record in duals, including a 5-5 mark in conference and an 9-6 mark at the No. 1 position. She has two ranked wins on the season, defeating No. 50 Taylor Bridges (LSU, April 10) and No. 35 Indianna Spink (Arkansas, April 19) in her final two matches of the season.
In the fall, Murgett became the first ITA regional champion in program history after capturing the singles title at the ITA Central Regional in October, producing a 6-0 record at the tournament. Murgett entered the tournament as the No. 20 seed and defeated the No. 45-, 13-, 29-, 12-, 9- and 7-seeds to capture the title.
In doubles play, Murgett and Oliveira have posted a 9-5 record on the season, all at the No. 1 position, and have four ranked wins on the season. The duo currently ranks No. 45 in the Oracle/ITA National Doubles Rankings. The Tiger team got their spring season started on the right foot, as they defeated Oklahoma State's No. 34-ranked Bunyami Thamchaiwat and Ayumi Miyamoto, 6-3, on Jan. 16. They also defeated No. 24-ranked Sabina Machalova and Alexa Bortles (Ole Miss), 6-1, on Feb. 22, and No. 42-ranked Tatiana Makarova and Jayci Goldsmith (Texas A&M), 6-3, on April 8 and No. 72-ranked Morgan Cross and Tatum Rice (Arkansas), 6-2, on April 19.
