GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Mizzou men's swimming and diving team placed 16th at the 2021 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships as the squad concluded action at the four-day meet, held at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C.
The Tigers posted two individual top 11 finishes and a top 14 relay finish during final day action on Saturday. Juniors Danny Kovac (Fort Collins, Colo.) and Jack Dahlgren (Victoria, Minn.) each claimed All-America honorable mention accolades with placements 10th in the 200 fly and 11th in the 200 back, respectively, while Mizzou's 400 free relay took 14th overall.
Over the four-day meet, Mizzou tallied two school records, both by Kovac, three top seven finishes and 10 top 15 placements.
KEY PERFORMANCES
Kovac nabbed his third individual top 10 finish of the meet after placing 10th in the 200 fly. Kovac, who prior to this season had not swam the 200 fly since high school, clocked a 1:41.14 in the consolation final to break his own school record set at last month's Southeastern Conference Championships. It was his second school record in as many days, as he also lowered his own 100 fly mark during Friday action.
Seeded 29th in the 200 back entering the Championships, Dahlgren earned All-America honorable mention honors in the event with a 11th-place finish. The junior swam a pair of season-bests on Saturday, first a 1:40.49 in prelims, followed by a 1:40.33 in the consolation final to move up 18 spots from seed.
The Tigers closed the meet with touching 14th in the 400 free relay, as sophomore Ben Patton (Wichita, Kan.), Dahlgren, senior Grant Reed (Austin, Texas) and Kovac swam a 2:50.82 in the timed final.
QUOTABLES
Mizzou head coach Andrew Grevers
"Jack and Danny did a great job tonight, especially with Danny setting another school record. We scored some points in the relay, and the final result was 16th for the Tigers. To say that I'm proud of this group of men for everything they've gone through this season to get to this point would be an understatement. I'm so honored to have spent the year with this group and I'm so proud of all our Tigers, men and women, for everything we did this season."
