COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou Track and Field redshirt freshman Mitch Weber (Saint Clair, Minn.) was named SEC Men's Newcomer of the Week, as announced by the league on Tuesday. At the Mizzou Spring Opener, Weber debuted for the Tigers in the men's discus with a mark of 60.99m (200-1), which is currently the second best mark in the nation and top among SEC competitors.
Earning his first SEC weekly honor, Weber finished first in the discus at the Mizzou Spring Opener with his personal best throw. His throw also moved him into the Mizzou record books, as he now holds the second-best discus mark in school history, and the farthest throw since 1976. On the weekend, Weber also competed in the shot put and hammer throw, placing in second and fourth, respectively.
Despite completing two indoor seasons at Mizzou, Weber had yet to compete in the Black & Gold during the outdoor season prior to the meet, as he redshirted the 2018-19 campaign and 2019-20 campaign was canceled due to COVID-19.
Weber is the first Mizzou track & field athlete to earn SEC weekly honors since Ja'Mari Ward (Cahokia, Ill.) did so during the 2019 indoor season for his performance in the men's long jump at the Aggie Invitational.
