Rising sophomore chats with MUTigers.com
Q: Where are you at right now and how are you handling everything?
A: I'm at home in Frisco, (Texas), right now with my family. Basically, to get through the day, I make a plan of what I need to get through the day and try to follow it as if I was on-campus – making sure I wake up early and eat breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Q: What does a normal day look like for you?
A: I'll wake up at around 8:30 and eat breakfast. I have my first class usually at 9:30 and then my next one at 11. I'll have a little break to eat lunch, and then I'll have tutoring. After that I'm off for the day and just spend the rest of the day doing homework and getting ready for the next day.
Q: What are you studying and what's your course load?
A: I'm in Chem 2, Spanish, Intro to Hispanic Literature and then Genetics. I'm also in an Honors Reading Tutorial – basically we read books for the Unbound Book Festival. My major is biology and Spanish – my goal is to be an anesthesiologist.
Q: What have you been reading for your Honors program?
A: Right now we're reading "Ordinary Light" (by Tracy K. Smith). It's a memoir, and she was the poet laureate of the United States. It's really good, it's a memoir about her life. We also read a graphic novel, two books of poetry and one novel. I really like the memoir we're reading right now. It's so interesting to read about her life, and I see a lot of myself in it. It's about how she grew up as a young, Black woman, so I relate a lot to what she went through.
Q: Have you ever done any online learning prior to this?
A: It wasn't that hard for me to transfer to online learning. I graduated early to transfer to Mizzou, so I took a lot of online classes and had to do the second half of my senior year online basically. So it wasn't that bad. I'm used to going at my own pace.
Q: What went into the decision to enroll early at Mizzou?
A: I talked to (head coach Bryan) Blitz about this a lot. He pointed out some really good upside to (enrolling early). He said I would be able to get into better shape, I'd be more prepared going into the season, and it would give me a head start on school. My end goal is to be a doctor, so getting a head start on school is really good. I really didn't see any downside either – the one thing I was looking forward to second semester of senior year was going to prom, and (the coaching staff) said I could go to prom. And then I got to come home and walk (at graduation). Really, I saw an opportunity to get ahead athletically and academically.
Q: What were those first couple weeks like with enrolling early?
A: It was pretty hard those first few weeks. Last winter was super brutal – I'm from Texas and we don't get a lot of snow. Getting up there and having to get up at 5 in the morning was a complete 180 from my life back home. It was hard to get used to, but my teammates helped me get through it. They were all really supportive and nice.
A: What were some of your favorite moments of this past Fall?
A: My favorite moments would be during games – like if it was a close game and we did something well, you could feel the energy. Everyone is super excited and happy. I also really enjoyed traveling with the team. When we travel they assign us different rooms. You gravitate towards your friends, and they don't assign you with your friends, they do that on purpose, so you get to know your other teammates.
Q: What was your favorite trip?
A: I guess the trip to California and Colorado. The whole team went and that was really fun. We got to spend a lot of time with each other and different activities.
Q: What's your message to Tiger Fans during this time?
A: Keep your head up and keep working through it. Times are tough, but we can all get through it together. Just stay focused, and take some time to relax a bit.
