Senior earns first career weekly honors for Mizzou Soccer after scoring game-winning goal
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Mizzou Soccer senior Cassidy Nurnberger has been named the conference's Defensive Player of the Week, the Southeastern Conference announced on Monday.
The accolade is Nurnberger's first weekly honor of her career, and she is the first Tiger to win conference defensive player of the week since Kelsey Dossey (Oct. 27, 2017).
Starting at defensive midfielder, Nurnberger played 84 minutes of Mizzou's 2-1 win over No. 13 Vanderbilt on Saturday. The New Haven, Mo., native scored the game-winning goal to put the Tigers up 2-0 over the Commodores in the 61st minute. The goal was her first since scoring on a penalty kick, and her first ever in the open field, in a win over Kentucky on Sept. 13, 2018.
Nurnberger's efforts in the midfield helped Mizzou win the possession battle, 67 percent to 33 percent. She also had a key deflection on a shot in the final 20 minutes to help preserve the 2-1 advantage for the Tigers.
The win over Vanderbilt was the first Top 25 win for Mizzou since defeating No. 22 Kentucky on Sept. 25, 2015, ending a 16-match losing streak against ranked teams.
Mizzou (1-1-0) will hit the road to play at Tennessee, Friday, Oct. 9. Kickoff will be at 6 p.m. (Central) on SEC Network.
