Mizzou Tennis Earns Five Wins to Open Mizzou Invite

Fukutoku and Wright each win twice on the day
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Tennis opened up the first day of competition at the eighth annual Mizzou Invite with five victories, four in singles competition and one in doubles competition. Hosted at the Mizzou Tennis Complex, sophomore Lisa Fukutoku (Tokyo, Japan) and junior Ellie Wright (Gainesivlle, Fla.) each picked up two wins on the day.
The four-team invitational saw morning singles competition between Tulsa and SMU and afternoon singles competition between Mizzou and Houston. Between the two, the four teams joined for a quartet of doubles matches.
DOUBLES
In doubles competition, Mizzou picked up a victory against SMU, as the team of Ellie Wright & Lisa Fukutoku defeated Claudia Bartolome & Sarai Monnarrez Yesaki, 6-3.
SINGLES
Fukutoku and Wright continued their success as play transitioned to singles competition, as they each won their individual matches against Houston players. After dropping the first set, 6-4, Fukutoku came back to defeat Ndindi Ndunda, in the second set, 6-4 and the third-set tiebreaker, 10-8. Wright earned her victory in straight sets over Mimi Kendall-Woseley, winning 7-5, 7-6.
Mizzou also had match wins from senior Serena Nash (Bradford, England), who beat Sophie Gerits, 6-4, 6-1, and junior Marta Oliveira (Lisbon, Portugal), who won 6-4, 6-2, over Phonexay Chitdara.
QUOTABLES
"I thought we did a good job of bouncing back today after some tough doubles matches," said head coach Colt Gaston. "I was very proud of the fight on all courts and the way we played the big points under pressure. We look forward to getting back at it tomorrow."
UP NEXT
Mizzou will continue with the second day of competition at the Mizzou Invite on Saturday, as the Tigers face Houston in doubles competition at 9 a.m. CT, Tulsa in doubles competition at 10 a.m. CT and SMU in singles competition at 1:30 p.m. CT.
