After a dominant season debut, Mizzou travels to Vanderbilt
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Cross Country continues its 2019 season on Saturday with the Commodore Classic at the University of Vanderbilt. Mizzou travels to Nashville, Tenn., to take on a number of SEC foes after cruising to a victory at the Mizzou Cross Country Opener on September 30. This Saturday at Percy Warner Park, the men are scheduled to begin the 8000m race at 8:30 A.M. CT while the women's team will begin its 6,000m race at 9:15 A.M. CT.
On the women's side, a batch of runners that led Mizzou nearly two weeks ago will be prominent once again. Senior Melissa Menghini (Fenton, Mo.), junior Sarah Chapman (Maidenhead, England), sophomore Mikayla Reed (Augusta, Mo.), redshirt senior Jordyn Kleve (Urbandale, Iowa), and freshman Ginger Murnieks (Lee's Summit, Mo.) finished as a group that lead all runners at the Mizzou XC Opener and will look to build on their success in Nashville. Murnieks earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors after her impressive collegiate debut.
The men's team will also look to replicate a dominating performance at the Mizzou XC Opener as redshirt senior Thomas George (Gloucester, England) and senior Kieran Wood (Cambridge, England), who finished first and second at LA Nickell, lead a group of nine Mizzou men.
The Tigers' appearance in the Commodore Classic will be its first since 2017 when the women posted a third-place team finish while the men finished seventh. A number of athletes from 2017 will be competing in the Classic for a second time including George who finished 13th overall, redshirt senior Michael Widmann (Naperville, Ill.), junior Lexi Maddox (Riverside, Mo.), Kleve and Menghini.
The Commodore Classic is the second of five meets that Mizzou will participate in prior to entering postseason competiton. Mizzou will return home for the Mizzou Cross Country Challenge on Friday September 27 at Gans Creek Cross Country Course, the Tiger's brand new state-of-the-art facility on the south side of Columbia.
