Both Mizzou teams cruise to win at the Mizzou XC Opener
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Cross Country opened the 2019 season on Friday evening with the Mizzou Cross Country Opener at LA Nickell Golf Course in Columbia, Mo. Mizzou cruised to a number of impressive performances in its first home meet since 2014. In the women's 4K race, Mizzou set the pace by claiming the top four attached finishing positions while the Mizzou men were led by the tandem of redshirt senior Thomas George (Gloucester, England) and senior Kieran Wood (Cambridge, U.K.), who finished first and second, respectively. The Mizzou men finished the 6K race with seven runners within the top nine finishers.
NOTABLE TIGERS
In the women's 4K race, the group of junior Sarah Chapman (Maidhead, U.K.), sophomore Mikayla Reed (Washington, Mo.), freshman Ginger Murnieks (Lee's Summit, Mo.), and redshirt senior Jordyn Kleve (Urbandale, Iowa) finished together as the first unattached runners. A total of eight Mizzou women collected finishes within the top-10.
In the men's 6K, George and Wood dominated the race, finishing with times of 18:55:44 and 18:55:84, respectively. Meanwhile, redshirt freshman Victor Mugeche (Blue Springs, Mo.) and sophomore Oaklee Hauschild (Blue Springs, Mo.) also notched impressive finishes, rounding out the overall top-five with times of 19:18.12 and 19:18.55, respectively.
QUOTABLES
"This was a great opener to the season," said head coach Marc Burns. "We are thrilled to have opened up in Columbia and a special thanks goes out to Mike Griggs and his crew at Columbia Parks and Recreation. They really went above and beyond to make this happen. The rain today made putting on the meet quite a challenge. As luck would have it, the rain stopped and the sun actually came out for the men's race! We executed the game perfectly today. The pack running was the main objective and we did a great job in both races of working together throughout each loop. It was exciting to see our returners be strong leaders and our newcomers step up and roll with them. This is a great start to the season and one we are looking forward to building race to race."
UP NEXT
Mizzou heads to Vanderbilt on Saturday, Sept. 14 for the Commodore Classic. Mizzou's trip to Nashville will be followed by a return to Columbia for the Mizzou Cross Country Challenge which will serve as the opening meet at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course.
