Sophomore's goal in the second minute gives Mizzou a 1-0 win over Southern Miss
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Soccer (1-0-0) opened up the 2019 season with a 1-0 victory over Southern Miss (0-0-1) at Walton Stadium on Thursday evening. With an opening goal in the second minute by forward Julissa Cisneros, the Tigers took the 1-0 lead. Forward Sarah Luebbert recorded an assist on the goal, as she dropped a pass in behind the Southern Miss defenders to a striking Cisneros, who buried the ball in the left side of the net. Cisneros and Luebbert, the Tigers' leading scorers from a season ago, connected for the first Mizzou goal of the season.
The fast start didn't stop for Mizzou, as the Tigers recorded five shots and four corners through 15 minutes. The defense also provided a strong performance, keeping Southern Miss out of the box for much of the first half. The Golden Eagles were held to zero shots through 28 minutes of play. As the game went on and into the second half, the game became more balanced, but Mizzou still controlled possession.
Many freshmen saw their first minutes of action in a Mizzou uniform. Defender Caroline Lyman started, and Jadyn Easly and Eryka McIntyre came into the game later as substitutes.
TURNING POINT
Mizzou started fast, scoring in the second minute to take the lead. Luebbert lobbed an excellent pass over the Southern Miss defenders to Cisneros, who timed her run perfectly to find the ball and score in the left side of the net. With that the Tigers had the 1-0 lead, and a strong defensive performance for the remainder of the game secured the victory.
