Tigers close exhibition slate with 3-1 win on the road
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Mizzou Soccer closed its exhibition slate with a 3-1 road victory over Colorado State, Wednesday at CSU Soccer Field.
Today's victory marked a triumphant return for a quartet of Tigers with ties to the Centennial State. Freshmen Briana Abam (Aurora, Colo.) and Haley Steinke (Castle Rock, Colo.), alongside junior Bella Alessi (Fort Collins, Colo.) and senior Peyton Joseph (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) all came to Mizzou from the Colorado pipeline.
TURNING POINT
Mizzou took command early in the exhibition and never relented, carrying a 2-0 lead into halftime. Freshman Jadyn Easley sunk one in the back of the net in the 15th minute to put the Tigers on the board. On the opposite end of the spectrum, senior Sarah Luebbert capitalized on a penalty kick, adding a goal of her own seven minutes later in the 22nd for the game-winning goal.
In the second half, Mizzou scored their third goal of the game thanks to a shot from Julissa Cisneros for their third goal of the match.
The Rams would add a goal in the second half, but the Tigers held on for the victory.
QUOTABLE
"Colorado State is a class program and challenged us in our final exhibition game," head coach Bryan Blitz said. "We are excited to take the lessons we learned into our home opener."
TOP TIGERS
- Despite all stats from today's exhibition being unofficial, Easley has wasted no time in making her presence known on the roster. The native of Ozark, Mo. scored the first goal of 2019 for the Tigers, and the freshman will hope to make an impact when the regular season begins next week.
- The top two goal scorers for Mizzou in 2018, both Luebbert and Cisneros were able to see the back of the net in today's game. Both led the program with 11 points last season, and will hope to increase that total this year.
UP NEXT
Mizzou will open its regular season next week at home against Southern Miss, Aug. 22, before hitting the road to face Ohio State, Aug. 25.
