Santos becomes Mizzou’s first triple jump All-American, Jacobs records third-career All-America honor
AUSTIN, Texas – Mizzou Track & Field recorded two NCAA First Team All-America finishes on Saturday at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Austin, Texas. In the triple jump, freshman Mirieli Santos (Mato Grosso, Brazil) reset her own school record to become Mizzou's first-ever All-American in the event, while redshirt senior Gabi Jacobs (Bloomington, Ill.) finished eighth in the discus to record her third consecutive All-America honor.
TEAM SCORES
The Mizzou women finished the meet in 36th-place with seven points after Santos and redshirt sophomore Sophia Rivera (Brentwood, Mo.) each scored three points and Jacobs score one point. Mizzou has now finished in the top-40 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in seven of the last eight seasons.
MIRIELI SANTOS
After entering the meet with a rank of No. 30, Santos' had a highly impressive showing in her debut at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, as she set three new personal records and reset her own school record. The Tiger freshman first reset her personal best in her second jump, as she recorded a leap of 13.17m (43-2.5), before recording marks of 13.34m (43-9.25) and 13.46m (44-2) in her third and fifth jumps, respectively, to finish sixth overall. With her First Team finish, Santos becomes the first female Mizzou student-athlete to record an All-American finish in the outdoor triple jump.
Santos' closes her terrific freshman campaign as Mizzou's school record holder in both the indoor and outdoor triple jumps, as she produced a mark of 13.21m (43-4.25) at the SEC Indoor Championships (Feb. 23). Santos finished the indoor season with an 11th-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships (March 10) to become Mizzou's first-ever indoor triple jump All-American. Santos also earned All-SEC Freshman Team honors during the outdoor season, as she was the top freshman finisher in the event with a seventh-place finish at 13.13m (43-1), which was Mizzou's previous school record mark.
GABI JACOBS
In the discus, Jacobs produced a mark of 56.68m (185-11) in her third throw to finish eighth and earn her third consecutive NCAA First Team All-America honor. With her third All-America nod, Jacobs becomes one of 16 female student-athletes in program history to earn three or more All-America honors and one of seven to earn three or more All-America honors at the NCAA Outdoor meet. Jacobs is the only Mizzou student-athlete to earn multiple discus All-America honors.
Mizzou has now earned six All-America honors in the discus, as Jacobs is joined by Cindy Kaiser (1977), Erica Brooks (1992 – 10th), Kearsten Peoples (2012 – 6th) and her own back-to-back fifth-place finishes in 2017 and 2018.
Jacobs concludes her illustrious Mizzou career as a three-time All-American, three-time SEC champion, Mizzou's school record holder in the discus, and program top-10 marks in the indoor and outdoor shot put. In addition to being the only multiple-time All-American in the discus, Jacobs is the only multiple-time conference champion in the event, and only one of 12 female student-athletes to record three or more conference titles in program history.
