Tiger southpaw has been one of the nation’s top hurlers in his junior campaign
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Baseball junior LHP TJ Sikkema was recognized for his outstanding junior campaign Monday, as the Southeastern Conference named him to its 2019 Second-Team All-SEC squad. It marks Sikkema's second career postseason honor by the league office, as he garnered Freshman All-SEC recognition in 2017.
Sikkema is the first Tiger to receive First or Second-Team All-SEC accolades since RHP Breckin Williams in 2015. Williams was Second-Team All-SEC that year, while DH/UTIL Keaton Steele produced First-Team honors in 2013.
In 2019, Sikkema has solidified himself as one of the nation's top pitchers. Heading into this week's SEC Tournament, he possesses a 7-4 record with a sparkling 1.32 ERA. The Dewitt, Iowa, native has produced 101 strikeouts over 88.2 innings pitched and limited opposition to a miniscule .175 batting average.
Sikkema's fantastic 1.32 ERA currently ranks fifth in the NCAA. Additionally, his 5.48 hits allowed per nine innings pitched ranks 15th-best in the country, 0.96 WHIP ranks 23rd and 101 punch outs ranks 37th in the nation.
On May 15, Sikkema was named one of 25 semifinalists for the prestigious 2019 Golden Spikes Award. He became the first Tiger to garner Golden Spikes Award semifinalist recognition since RHP Kyle Gibson in 2009. Sikkema is Mizzou's third all-time individual to receive the high accolade, as RHP Aaron Crow was the first to do so in 2008.
With 258 career strikeouts over his three-year career at Mizzou, Sikkema currently places sixth all-time in the Tiger record book.
