Sterk talks success of spring sports, department as a whole
It has been another wildly successful year for Mizzou Athletics under third-year Athletic Director Jim Sterk. After tying its best finish ever in the Learfield Director's Cup in each of the last two seasons, Mizzou is currently ranked 35th in this year's standings with softball, baseball and track & field all projected to have success during NCAA postseason competition. Solid performances from each of those programs could yield Mizzou's best finish ever in the Director's Cup standings, which rank the across-the-board success of every Division I athletic department.
What is even more impressive is the way that both Mizzou Baseball and Mizzou Softball galvanized around what looked to be an NCAA postseason ban at the start of the year. First-year softball coach Larissa Anderson's squad was picked to finish last in the SEC during the preseason and has already scoffed at that prediction, finishing tied for sixth in the nation's premier softball conference while qualifying for an NCAA Regional, which begins this weekend. Steve Bieser's baseball squad was picked to finish last in the SEC East and currently sits third in the loaded division and ranked in every major top-25 pol. The team has an RPI of 14 heading into this weekend's regular season finale against Florida. Not only should Bieser's squad be expected to qualify for NCAA competition, but its RPI has the Tigers in line to possibly host an NCAA Regional should the Tigers find a way to win this weekend's series with the Gators.
Mizzou AD Jim Sterk caught up with Mizzou Network's Ben Arnet to talk about all of the positives going on at Mizzou in his monthly Inside the Huddle segment. Watch the interview below:
