COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS – The Mizzou tennis team used a singles victory from sophomore Marta Oliveira (Lisbon, Portugal) but 11-seed Arkansas registered a 4-1 win Wednesday morning in the first round of the SEC Tournament in College Station, Texas.
The Razorbacks improved to 14-13 on the season and advanced to the second round, while Mizzou ended its season with a 14-15 record.
DOUBLES
Arkansas went up 1-0 after taking the doubles point after taking victories at No. 1 and 3 competition. Sophomore Ellie Wright (Gainesville, Fla.) and freshman Lisa Fukutoku (Tokyo, Japan) were defeated by Lauren Alter and Tatum Rice, 6-1, at No. 1, and junior Gabrielle Goldin (Bradenton, Fla.) and sophomore Taylor Gruber (Spicewood, Texas) fell 6-2 to Miruna Tudor and Jackie Carr at No. 3.
SINGLES
The Razorbacks took early advantages in many of the singles matches, with the Tigers coming back and playing well in the later stages of the matches.
Arkansas used wins at No. 3 and 4 singles to take a 3-0 advantage, after Gruber fell to Tudor at No. 4, 6-2, 6-1, and Fukutoku lost to Alter at No. 3 action, 6-1, 6-2.
Oliveira came out on top in a first-set tiebreak en route to a 7-6 (3), 6-0 win against Laura Rijkers at No. 5 singles. The victory improved Oliveira's dual match record to a perfect 4-0, and upped her 2018-19 mark to 15-2.
A 6-0, 6-2 win for No. 85 Martina Zerulo over junior Mackenzy Middlebrooks (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) at No. 1 secured the win for Arkansas and eliminated Mizzou from the SEC Tournament.
Both junior Serena Nash (Bradford, England) and freshman Vivien Ábrahám (Budapest, Hungary) dropped their first sets but stormed back with strong second sets. Nash claimed the second set, 6-4, to force a third, and Abraham had a 5-3 edge in the second, but play was halted before they could continue their comebacks.
