OXFORD, Miss. – The Mizzou tennis team fell 4-0 on the road to Ole Miss Sunday afternoon at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center in Oxford, Miss.
The Tigers dropped to 13-10 overall on the year and 0-9 in Southeastern Conference competition, while the Rebels improved to 7-8 and 4-5.
DOUBLES
The Rebels earned wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles play to take a 1-0 advantage. At No. 2 action, junior Mackenzy Middlebrooks (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and sophomore Marta Oliveira (Lisbon, Portugal) fell to Tea Jandric and Anna Vrbenska, 6-2, and juniors Gabrielle Goldin (Bradenton, Fla.) and Serena Nash (Bradford, England) were defeated by Cameron Kriscunas and Tereza Janatova, 6-4, at No. 3.
SINGLES
Wins at No. 1, 3 and 5 singles competition clinched the 4-0 victory for the Rebels. Janatova defeated sophomore Taylor Gruber (Spicewood, Texas), 6-3, 6-1, at No. 5 and Sabina Machalova downed Middlebrooks at No. 1 action, 6-0, 6-2. Ole Miss secured the victory with a 6-1, 6-3 win from Vrbenska over Fukutoku at NO. 3 singles.
Both Oliveira and sophomore Ellie Wright (Gainesville, Fla.) won the first set in their matches but play was suspended once the Rebels clinched the win.
UP NEXT
Missouri returns home for a trio of matches at the Mizzou Tennis Complex next weekend. Mizzou opens play on Friday, April 5 against NO. 18 Tennessee at 5 p.m. On Sunday, April 7, the team hosts No. 1 Georgia at 1 p.m. and Western Illinois at 5 p.m.
