COLUMBIA, Mo. - Senior Haley Hynes (Lee's Summit, Mo.) and junior Carter Grimes (Las Vegas, Nev.) both posted nation-leading times twice on Thursday to highlight day two action at the Mizzou Invite for the No. 3/9 Mizzou men's and women's swimming and diving teams.
Hynes twice dropped the nation's top 100 back time, including an NCAA automatic qualifying time in the evening session, while Grimes garnered his top times in the 400 IM.
TOP TIGERS
After a time of 51.19 in the morning, Hynes clocked a 50.70 in the 100 back during the finals session. The time was a personal best, an NCAA A cut, and was less than two-tenths off Mizzou's school record.
Grimes swam the nation's fastest 400 IM time twice on the day. He first went 3:46.45 in prelims, then followed that up with a 3:44.72 in the finals session to take home the event win.
In the diving well, freshman Leonardo Garcia Varela (Cali, Colombia) took top honors on 3-meter with a finals round of 368.40. He went 400.55 in preliminaries, which moved him up to fifth all-time at Mizzou in the event.
Both the men's and women's 200 medley relay teams also notched nation-leading times Thursday evening. The women's relay of Hynes, freshman Molly Winer (Ames, Iowa), junior Sarah Thompson (Collierville, Tenn.) and sophomore Megan Keil (Derby, Kan.) swam a 1:35.69, which lowered their A cut and nation-leading time posted earlier in the season.
Senior Daniel Hein (Sycamore, Ill.) and sophomore Danny Kovac (Fort Collins, Colo.) added individual event wins. Hein won 100 back with a 45.82, just off his nation-leading time of 45.77 from yesterday, and Kovac won the 100 breast in a personal best 52.73.
QUOTABLES
Mizzou Head Coach Andrew Grevers
"Tonight we started feeling the length of the meet. A lot of our individuals are figuring out how to work through that, how to prepare their bodies as it fatigues and still find a way to perform well. Overall I thought the women did a really nice job tonight and we got to cap it off with some amazing backstrokes. The men fought hard, they just maybe felt the whole meet a little bit more tonight. But I expect them to swim it out, recover and bounce back tomorrow, just how Zou Style has prepared us to do."
