COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Cross Country freshman Jenna Schwartz (Waterloo, Ill.) was named Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, announced Tuesday by the league office. Schwartz finished second among freshman and 23rd overall with a time of 22:00.6 in the 6k race at last week's Commodore Classic in Nashville, Tenn.
Schwartz is the second Mizzou athlete to earn Freshman of the Week honors this season after freshman Ginger Murnieks (Lee's Summit, Mo.) was recognized for her performance in the Mizzou Cross Country Opener on August 30. Sophomore Mikayla Reed (Washington, Mo.) and sophomore Tori Findley (Blue Springs, Mo.) both earned SEC Freshman of the Week accolades after impressive performances early in the season last year.
Schwartz was one of three Tigers to finish in the top-25 last Saturday, leading Mizzou to a fourth-place overall team finish. The Waterloo, Ill. native finished as the top SEC freshman in the meet and as the second freshman overall.
During her time at Waterloo High School in Waterloo, Ill., Schwartz earned all-state honors in each of her four seasons and became the school's first individual state champion when she won the Class 2A state title as a junior.
Mizzou will race next on Friday, September 27 when they host the Gans Creek Classic in Columbia, Missouri. The race will serve as the opening meet at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course.
