Daniel Hein, Annie Ochitwa Named Google Cloud Academic All-Americans

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Daniel Hein (Sycamore, Ill.) and Annie Ochitwa (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) of the Mizzou men's and women's swimming and diving programs garnered 2018-19 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division I At-Large honors, announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Friday. Hein, a junior in 2018-19, earned a spot on the first team, while 2018-19 senior Ochitwa was named to the second team.

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Daniel Hein (Sycamore, Ill.) and Annie Ochitwa (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) of the Mizzou men's and women's swimming and diving programs garnered 2018-19 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division I At-Large honors, announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Friday. Hein, a junior in 2018-19, earned a spot on the first team, while 2018-19 senior Ochitwa was named to the second team.

Hein became only the second member of the Tiger men's swimming and diving program to claim Academic All-America® honors, joining swimmer Matt Ferrarelli (third team) in 2003. Ochitwa is the sixth Mizzou women's team member earn the accolades, joining swimmer Stacy Hall (third team) in 1996, diver Kristy Wanner (second team) in 2001, swimmer Molly Christensen (third team) in 2003, diver Lauren Reedy (third team) in 2017 and swimmer Sharli Brady (third team) in 2018. 

Unlike the other Academic All-America® teams which represent a single sport, the at-large program spans several men's and women's sports. The women's at-large team includes beach volleyball, bowling, rowing, field hockey, fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis and water polo, while the men include fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo, volleyball and wrestling.

Ochitwa recently concluded her collegiate career as a 15-time All-American, with four first team and 11 honorable mention honors to her name. At the 2019 NCAA Championships, she garnered five honorable mention accolades, including individual finishes of ninth in the 100 fly and 10th in the 100 free. She also swam on Mizzou's All-America honorable mention 200 free, 400 free and 200 medley relays, and earned All-Southeastern Conference second team honors for her performance at the 2019 SEC Championships.

In her first season at Missouri after transferring from Arizona, Ochitwa claimed one first team and three honorable mention All-America honors as a junior in 2017-18, including an eighth-place finish in the 100 fly at the Championships. She ended her Tiger career as Mizzou's record holder in the 100 free, ranked second in the 50 free and 100 fly, fifth in the 200 free and seventh in the 100 back.

A two-time NCAA Championships qualifier as well, Hein is a four-time All-American for the Tigers, with three first team and one honorable mention accolades. As a junior in 2018-19, he swam on Mizzou's seventh-place 400 medley relay and 15th-place 200 medley relay at NCAAs. Hein also posted finishes of 19th in the 200 back and 22nd in the 100 back at the meet. He earned All-SEC first team honors this year after swimming on Mizzou's SEC champion 400 medley relay, which was the first men's relay in program history to win a conference title. Hein holds Mizzou's 100 back school mark, while ranking fourth in both the 200 back and 100 fly.
