COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Track & Field began the first day of competition at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational on Friday, as redshirt sophomore Ja'Mari Ward (Cahokia, Ill.), sophomore Nylo Clarke (Riverside, Mo.) and redshirt junior Jordan McClendon (Black Jack, Mo.) all shined for the Black & Gold. Ward and Clarke won their events in the long jump and 400m dash, respectively, while McClendon finished second in the weight throw and once again improved on her personal record mark.
NOTABLE FINISHES
Ward, Mizzou's school record holder in the long jump, produced a mark of 7.67m (25-2) on Friday to win the event. The event win was his third of the season, as he also won the long jump at the Missouri Intercollegiate (Jan. 11) with a jump of 7.81m (25-7.5) and the Larry Wieczorek Invitational (Jan. 19) with a jump of 7.78m (25-6.25).
McClendon impressed once again in the weight throw, as she improved her personal record mark for the third time this season with a throw of 21.76m (71-4.75), besting her previous best mark of 21.74m (71-4) which she set at the Mizzou Open (Jan. 25). The mark still holds as the second-best mark in program history, and is the sixth-best mark thrown in the nation this season. Redshirt freshman Sydney Oberdiek (Platte City, Mo.) also produced a personal best mark in the event, as she finished eighth with a throw of 18.41m (60-4.75).
Clarke joined Mizzou's top-10 list for the first time in his career, as he finished first in the 400m dash at 47.50. His time is the third-fastest time clocked in program history, trailing only Kahmari Montgomery (45.78) and Jerrad Mason (46.89). In the 60m dash, senior Maya Cody (St. Louis, Mo.) advanced to the finals after finishing third in the preliminaries with a time of 7.53.
Sophomore Jason Edwards (Eldon, Mo.) set personal best marks in all four events of the heptathlon that were competed on Friday, and sits in fourth place with 2,877 points heading into the final three events on day two. Edwards finished fifth in the 60m dash at 7.21, nine in the long jump at 6.48m (21-3.25), third in the shot put at 13.20m (43-3.75) and ninth in the high jump at 1.88m (6-2).
