LOS ANGELES — @MizzouSoccer (1-4-1) fell at No. 4 USC (5-0-1) Friday, as the Trojans scored a goal in both halves to edge the Tigers at McAlister Field, 2-0. Mizzou had its chances in the second half, but the Trojan defense held strong, registering its fifth shutout of the season.
The Tiger defense, led by senior goalkeeper Kelsey Dossey (Plainfield, Ind.) and her career-best 10 saves, held strong against an explosive attack for most of the game. However, USC, which fired a whopping 31 shots in the game, had enough offensively and defensively to get another positive result. Â Â
TURNING POINT
The game score stood at just 0-1, and Mizzou was starting to gain a little bit of momentum. However, USC put an end to that in the 64th minute, when the Trojans scored their second goal off of a perfectly executed short corner.
After two passes that led the ball to the top of the 18-yard box, a USC attacker perfectly chipped the ball into the top corner, giving Dossey no chance to save it.
TOP TIGERS
- Dossey had 10 saves, which set a new season-high, topping her previous best (8), which came against Iowa State in her first start of the season. It also tied her career-high, as the senior had 10 saves against LSU a season ago to help clinch the Tigers' spot in the 2017 SEC Tournament.
- Freshman forward Julissa Cisneros (Moreno Valley, Calif.) registered Mizzou's best chance in what was a homecoming for her, as her only shot on the day was on goal.
QUOTEABLES
"I was really excited that our team worked the plan today," head coach Bryan Blitz said. "We came to play a really tough USC on their turf, and that is always tough. We had our chances towards the end to make it close, and I think we got better today. We will take that and apply it to a good Gonzaga team on Sunday."
UP NEXT
The Tigers will host Gonzaga for the first time in program history after a brief one game road trip on the west coast. That game is set to kickoff Sunday, September 9 at 1 p.m. CT, and can be viewed on SEC Network +.
