Gutierrez Lozano, Guyett Claim CSCAA National Collegiate Open Water National Titles

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Redshirt sophomore Giovanni Gutierrez Lozano and freshman Audrey Guyett claimed individual national titles at the 2018 College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) National Collegiate Open Swim Saturday morning at Lone Star Lake in Lawrence, Kansas. Guyett and Gutierrez Lozano led the men's and women's teams to team titles at the event as well.

Gutierrez Lozano earned the men's national title for the second consecutive year.

The 5,000-meter race (3.1 miles) was a two-loop swim of Lone Star Lake.

TOP TIGERS

Gutierrez Lozano defended his title with a swim of 59:17.48, eight seconds faster from his winning time from a year ago. He narrowly out-swam junior Giovanny Lima, who finished second in 59:17.77. Also earning a top-three finish with a time of 59:21.09 was senior Jacob Wielinski.

Other men's competitors included freshmen Jack Dubois (seventh in 59:46.7) and Dane Florea (ninth in 59:52.52).

Guyett won the women's race by just shy of a minute, as she finished the race in 1:03:06.31. Fellow freshman Ana Pozder held on for second-place in 1:03:07.28 and junior Azra Avdic took fourth in 1:03:10.20.

Additionally, senior Courtney Evensen placed seventh in 1:03:17.82 and freshman Molly Gowans was 14th in 1:04:25.28.

The Mizzou men's and women's swimming and diving teams officially open the 2018-19 season with the 13th annual Show-Me Showdown on Friday, Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. at the Mizzou Aquatic Center.
