COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Cross Country will begin its 2018 campaign on Saturday, as the team will head to Memphis, Tenn., for the Brooks Twilight Classic. The women will toe the start line first in a 5000m race at 9:00 p.m. (CT), followed by a men's four-mile race as both races will be run under the lights at Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
Mizzou will have 31 runners on the course Saturday, 11 on the men's side and 20 for the women. Of the 31 racers, eight will be making their collegiate or Mizzou debut.
The women's team will be looking to build off a successful 2017 season, which saw them place fourth at both the SEC Championships and the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships. Mizzou returns five runners from who ran in those meets a year ago, including sophomore Jenna Lutzow (Poplar Grove, Ill.) and redshirt junior Sophia Racette (St. Louis, Mo.), who are both scheduled to run on Saturday. Six Mizzou freshman – Tori Findley (Blue Springs, Mo.), Abby Hake (Jefferson City, Mo.), Lilly Hamilton (Monument, Colo.), Mikayla Reed (Washington, Mo.), Reilly Revord (Hinsdale, Ill.) and Emma Roth (Parkville, Mo.) – will be making their collegiate debuts at the meet.
The men's team will return four runners who scored for Mizzou at last year's NCAA Midwest Regional meet, including redshirt junior Thomas George (Gloucester, UK.), who earned NCAA All-Midwest Regional Honors in 2017. Freshman Oaklee Hauschild (Blue Spring, Mo.) will be the lone Tiger making his collegiate debut on the men's side, while junior Kieran Wood (Cambridge, U.K.), a graduate transfer from the United Kingdom, will be making his Tiger debut.
Saturday's race will be the first of five meets for Mizzou before entering postseason competition. The Tigers will head south to Auburn, Ala., for the SEC Championships on Oct. 26, north to Peoria, Ill., for the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships on Nov. 9, and further north to Madison, Wis., for the NCAA Championships on Nov. 17.
