AMES, Iowa – @MizzouSoccer (1-0-1) got its first victory of the season Sunday, as the Tigers knocked off the Cyclones (1-1) 2-1 at the Cyclone Sports Complex. The Tigers again played well defensively, but finally broke through twice on offense to grab the win on the road, courtesy of a late Iowa State own goal in the 107th minute of play.
The Tiger's other second half goal came courtesy of a freshman find and freshman finish. Freshman forward Skye Kingsley (Naperville, Ill.) buried a header into the back of the net off of a beautiful line-drive cross from fellow freshman Blythe Beldner (Eureka, Mo.) in the 58th minute. The freshman connection gives Beldner her first career assist and Kingsley her first career goal.
TURNING POINT
With three minutes left in the last extra time period, the Tigers pushed forward to make one last attack. Beldner again had the ball, and again put a great, high-arching ball in the box, this time from further back on the pitch.
Instead of finding a teammate, the ball found the foot of an Iowa State defender, and rebounded into the goal. Sophomore midfielder Lindsey Whitmore (Henderson, Nev.) was applying intense pressure, and the defender had nowhere else left to go. The own goal served as the end to the match, and the Tigers notched their first victory in 2018.
QUOTABLES
"I am excited that our team showed grit against a good Iowa State team," head coach Bryan Blitz said. "Two overtime games on the road and to find a way to win in the last minute like that, we will absolutely take that."
TOP TIGERS
- Senior goalkeeper Kelsey Dossey (Plainfield, Ind.) recorded eight saves on the game. It was her first start of the season.
- Though she will not be credited for two assists, Beldner registered the assist on the first goal and played the ball into the box on the own goal winner.
- For the second straight game, the junior defensive duo of Anna Frick (Webster Groves, Mo.) and Peyton Joseph (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) played well into extra time, going the distance once again.
- Junior forward Sarah Luebbert (Jefferson City, Mo.) had two shots on goal in the game, including one that was saved off of the back line.
