Schweizer earns her ninth All-America honor, the second-most in program history
EUGENE, Ore. – Mizzou Track & Field senior Karissa Schweizer (Urbandale, Iowa) recorded her ninth All-America honor Thursday, as she finished third in the 10,000m run at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. With the third-place finish, Schweizer becomes the fourth 10K NCAA All-American in program history, following Serena Ramsey (sixth in 2006), Kaitlyn Fischer (ninth in 2014) and Jamie Kempfer (ninth in 2017).
Her nine All-America honors rank second in program history, trailing only Kearsten Peoples' who earned All-American recognition 10 times.
NOTABLE TIGERS
Schweizer remained in the lead pack for the entirety of the race before the top three finishers, Kansas' Sharon Lodeki, Louisville's Dorcas Wasike and Schweizer separated themselves over the last 400 meters. Schweizer crossed the finish line at 32:14.94, as the race's top-six finishers bested the previous meet record of 32:28.57, which was set by Cal State Los Angeles' Sylvia Mosqueda, who ran a 32:28.57 in 1988. Schweizer's time of 32:00.55 at the Stanford Invitational (March 30), remains the top-time ran in the NCAA in 2018 and the eighth-fastest collegiately all-time.
Schweizer found the All-American podium of the ninth time in her career, as she previously finished third in the outdoor 5000m run in 2016, first in cross country in 2016, first in the indoor 5000m in 2017, second in the indoor 3000m in 2017, first in the outdoor 5000m in 2017, 11th in cross country in 2017, first in the indoor 3000m in 2018 and first in the indoor 5000m in 2018.
The six-points Schweizer scored for finishing third was enough to put Mizzou in a three-way tie for 16th-place in the team race.
