Premier facility is the first LEED GOLD certified venue in the SEC
COLUMBIA, Mo. – As one of the new premier collegiate sports facilities in the nation, Mizzou Softball Stadium recently earned LEED GOLD building certification. Debuting in March 2017, Mizzou Softball Stadium becomes the first GOLD-level certified competition venue in the Southeastern Conference, surpassing University of Kentucky's Kroger Field Silver-level certification last year.
The Tigers' home venue is only one of two collegiate softball facilities in the country with LEED GOLD certification. Georgia Tech's Shirley Clements Mewborn Field first received the esteemed honor in 2009.
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the most widely used green building rating system in the world. LEED certification provides independent verification from the U.S. Green Building Council of a building's sustainable features.
Based on the number of points achieved, a project receives one of four rating levels: Certified (40 points), Silver (50 points), Gold (60 points) or Platinum (80 points). Mizzou Softball Stadium met the threshold of LEED GOLD certification by achieving a total of 61 points.
Of the points achieved, 15 points were awarded for its location, 27 points for the efficiency of the University of Missouri's campus combined heat and power plant, three points for campus-wide initiatives and 14 points by following the MU design and construction standards. The facility also accumulated two additional points for utilizing light-colored exterior paving and roofing materials.
Mizzou Softball Stadium will be the host of this year's SEC Softball Tournament from May 9-12. It will mark the Tigers' first-ever time hosting the premier collegiate softball postseason tournament.
