Omazic joins the Tigers after one season with Illinois
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Volleyball has added transfer middle blocker Tyanna Omazic (Lenexa, Kan.) to its 2018 roster, announced Thursday (May 10) by head coach Wayne Kreklow. Omazic will join the Tigers this upcoming season as a true sophomore after spending 2017 at the University of Illinois.
"We're extremely excited to add Tyanna to the Mizzou Volleyball family," Coach Kreklow said. "We recruited Tyanna quite heavily out of high school, so we know what she's capable of and the impact we expect her to have on our program. She's an outstanding volleyball player with great quickness and agility. Tyanna is an exceptional athlete as an attacker off of one foot and is outstanding at the net as a blocker. She's an intense competitor and will certainly help raise the level of play in our gym. We're excited to have her join us!"
Omazic appeared in 26 matches (14 starts) in her freshman campaign a season ago with the Fighting Illini. She saw an expanded role as the 2017 season progressed, leading to top-5 rankings on the team in total kills (114), hitting percentage (.271), solo blocks (11), block assists (74), total blocks (85), blocks per set (1.01) and points (172.0).
The talented middle blocker enjoyed a breakout weekend in the Fighting Illini's visit to the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational last September. Omazic was named to the All-Tournament Team after tallying eight kills on .538 hitting against Tennessee State and seven total blocks versus Missouri State in back to back victories for Illinois.
Omazic performed well down the stretch, as the Fighting Illini advanced to the Sweet 16 of last year's NCAA Tournament. Over the team's three-match run in postseason play, she recorded 22 kills and 15 total blocks.
Prior to her collegiate debut in Champaign, Illinois, Omazic was one of the nation's premier recruits at Olathe Northwest High School in Lenexa, Kansas. PrepVolleyball.com named her the No. 51 player in its Top 100 Senior Aces list in 2016.
Omazic led Olathe Northwest to a Kansas Class 6A volleyball championship in 2016 and was later named an AVCA Under Armour Girls High School All-America Third-Team honoree for her exceptional performance on the court. Over her high school career, she garnered three Kansas Volleyball Association All-Tournament Team honors and two KVA First-Team All-State awards.
