Lock becomes the 35th QB in FBS history to pass for 12,000 career yards in loss
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – No. 23 Mizzou Football lost the 60th Annual AutoZone Liberty Bowl to Oklahoma State, 38-33, Monday afternoon (Dec. 31) at Liberty Bowl Stadium. Mizzou finishes the year 8-5 overall while Oklahoma State closes the year 7-6 with the win. The 2018 season marked just the 12th time in program history that Mizzou won eight games and the team finished the year with its most wins since 2014.
Mizzou senior QB Drew Lock went 23-for-38 for 373 yards and three touchdowns, a new Mizzou bowl record. His outing Monday moved his career passing total to 12,193, becoming just the 35th FBS quarterback ever to reach 12,000 career yards. He is just the second SEC QB to accomplish that feat. Lock ranks third in SEC history in career passing touchdowns (98) and second in career passing yards (12,193).
TURNING POINT
Mizzou held a 16-14 lead late in the second quarter, but ran out of time on its final drive of the half as it took the two-point edge into the intermission. Oklahoma State got the ball first to begin the second half after deferring its selection to the second half after winning the coin toss. It took the ball and went 75 yards on 10 plays for a touchdown to take a 21-16 lead.
On Mizzou's ensuing possession, Drew Lock found Jalen Knox on a screen play and a tackle jarred the ball loose and Oklahoma State recovered deep in Mizzou territory. Three plays later, Chuba Hubbard found pay-dirt as Oklahoma State opened a 28-16 lead.
Mizzou got a 26-yard field goal from Tucker McCann on the ensuing drive to cut the lead to 28-19. On Oklahoma State's next drive, Mizzou forced a third-and-13 deep Cowboy territory, but OSU QB Taylor Cornelius found Tyron Johnson for a 32-yard gain to move the sticks. The two then hooked up again on the very next play, this time of a 46-yard score to put the game out of reach, 35-19.
Senior S Cam Hilton intercepted a pass deep in Mizzou territory and Lock found Johnson for 86 yards and a score on the very next play to cut the lead to 35-26. Hilton again came up with a huge interception to stall another Oklahoma State drive and Mizzou turned it into points on a 55-yard run on an option pitch by RB Larry Rountree III, cutting the lead to 35-33.
Mizzou then forced a stop and blew up an attempted fake punt deep in OSU territory. Mizzou failed to convert a first down after the fake punt and had to settle for a 42-yard field goal attempt. Oklahoma State blocked the kick and went down the field to kick a field goal. That gave the Pokes a 38-33 lead with 5:54 to play.
