Chadwick Nabs Two Golds at FINA Short Course World Championships

HANGZHOU, China - Former Mizzou swimming All-American Michael Chadwick earned two gold medals and helped the United States set a world record during two days of action at the 2018 FINA Short Course World Championships at the Hangzhou Olympic and International Expo Center in Hangzhou, China.

HANGZHOU, China - Former Mizzou swimming All-American Michael Chadwick earned two gold medals and helped the United States set a world record during two days of action at the 2018 FINA Short Course World Championships at the Hangzhou Olympic and International Expo Center in Hangzhou, China. 

Chadwick and U.S. teammates Caeleb Dressel, Blake Pieroni and Ryan Held earned the gold medal in the men's 4x100m free relay on Tuesday with a world record time of 3:03.03. The old record of 3:30.30 was held by the U.S. as well and dated back to 2009. The former Tiger swam the third leg of the relay and clocked a split of 45.86 in the final. 

Additionally, the U.S.'s 4x50m mixed medley took down another world record and claimed the gold on Wednesday. Chadwick earned his second gold of the Championships as a competitor on the U.S.'s relay in prelims. 

Chadwick, a three-time U.S. National Team member, recently won the 100m free national title at the 2018 U.S. Winter National Championships, beating Olympic gold medalist Nathan Adrian in the final. He concluded his collegiate career as the most decorated Tiger in program history in 200 as an 11-time first team and 11-time honorable mention All-American. Five of those first team honors came as an individual, including four over the his last two seasons. He finished second in the 100 free at the 2017 NCAA Championships in a school record time of 40.95, which also made him the event's fourth-fastest performer in history. Chadwick also placed fourth in the 50 free and 12th in the 100 breast at NCAAs and swam on Mizzou's third-place 400 medley relay, fourth-place 200 medley relay and seventh-place 200 free relay teams at the Championships. He still holds the Tiger 50 free (18.97), 100 free (40.95) and 200 IM (1:43.01) records.

Also competing at the meet is former national champion Fabian Schwingenschoegl, who is representing Germany. Schwingenschloegl advanced to the 100m breast semifinals but narrowly missed a spot in the event final, as he finished ninth with a semifinal time of 57.21. He will also swim in the 50m breast on Saturday. 

Schwingenschloegl claimed Mizzou's first individual swimming national tile in the 100 breast at the 2016 NCAA Championships. He also earned runner-up honors in the event in 2017 and finished third in the 200 breast in 2016. He concluded his two-year Tiger career in 2017 as a six-time first team All-American and a three-time honorable mention All-American. He still holds Missouri's 100 breast record (50.77) and sits second in the 200 breast (1:51.84). Schwingenschloegl also claimed the German 50m breast (long course) national title in 2016.
